"Safaree wait don't hang up I'm sorry for yelling." Nicki said into the phone.

"Nicki I'm really not in the mood for this today. I answered to make sure you were okay, but I won't sit here and let you talk down to me." Safaree said into the receiver.

"I'm sorry Faree. I don't want it to be like this between us anymore, I miss my best friend."

"You woulnd't have to miss me if you would have never left me." Safaree said in a low voice. Nicki sat quiet on the other end. "Oh you don't have nothing to say now huh?" Safaree said in a sarcastic way.

"Safaree how many times am I gonna have to apologize about the same thing? This is the reason I told you in the beginning I didn't want to get involved with you." Nicki stopped herself she didn't want to have this conversation over the phone she needed to see his face. Safaree was pacing the floor pissed at what she was saying. "Safaree will you please come over and talk to me. If we are going to have this conversation I need to see your face, it's been almost a month and 1/2 since we have had a civilized conversation with one another. I'm begging you Safaree please come see me." Nicki said tearing up. She never would have thought in a million years she would have to beg him to come to her.

"I'll be there in 30 minutes Nicki." He said through gritted teeth. "When I get there we will finish this conversation and don't try to divert the subject when I get there." with that he hung up the phone. He looked over at Melanie and saw the scowl on her face. "Don't start." he said. Getting off the couch. Melanie jumped off the couch and ran around and blocked his way.

"Don't do what huh? Don't be upset that every time we start to make progress with each other you let HER knock us five steps back?" Melanie said to him.

"Melanie I told you I didn't want a relationship yet. I'm not completely over her yet and it wouldn't be fair to you or me to start something. So I don't know why you are acting like i'm stringing you along. You knew what was up."

"Your right Safaree I did. But the way you hug me and hold me at night when we are talking you make it seems that it could be more. The way you kiss me at times. So excuse the fuck out of me if i'm reading your signals wrong." Melanie said wiping her tears away.

"I'm sorry if that's how you feel. I will make sure to keep my signals very clear from now on with you." She just rolled her eyes and walked down the hall to his room and closed the door to his bed room. He hated making her feel this way but he didn't know what else to do. He wanted to keep it honest with her but it seems like she wasn't able to handle that. He grabbed his keys and left out the door he would just deal with her when he got back.

Knock Knock! Nicki jumped up and walked towards the door. She checked herself out in the mirror making sure he couldn't see her baby bump and checking her hair. She had her natural hair out and flat ironed. She took a deep breath and opened the door. "Hi Safaree." He just walked  in and went into the living room and sat down. "Okay." Nicki said closing the door. She didn't see this going well. She went and sat on the foot stool in front of the couch where he was sitting. "How are you?" she asked. He just played with his phone. She sighed "Safaree we will never get anywhere if you don't talk to me. That is why you came over here right?" She said tilting her head to the side looking at him biting the inside of her jaw.

"I've been better." he said not looking up from his phone.

"Safaree please don't treat me like this." she said.

"Why should I care about your feelings you didn't care about mine in Jamaica." he spit the words like venom. Nicki just sat there. "There you go being a fucking mute again Onika. SAY SOMETHING!" He yelled. Nicki jumped.

"Safaree I thought  I was taking your feelings into consideration. I just got to thinking about--" she stopped. He looked at her to continue. "I can't talk about this." she got up to go to her room he stopped her.

"NO! When ever it gets to hard for Onika you wanna run away and MUM becomes the FUCKIN WORD with you. You are going to sit here and talk to me." She was now crying.

"I got to thinking about Javon okay! And how he said he would never leave me alone. And what happen Safaree huh? Hes NOT HERE ANYMORE! That was my last real relationship before you Safaree. I don't want to open myself up for that kind of heartache again. So there you have it. I'm scared Safaree." she said plopping down on the sofa with her hands in her lap. He had forgot all about Javon, Nickis first love. He was killed two years before Nicki made it big. They had been dating since Nicki was a freshman. He looked at her cry. He sat down and wrapped his arms around her.

"You know i'm not even about that life Nicki so you wouldn't ever have to worry about me going out like that. I would never leave you period." She looked at him.

"Yeah that's what you said when we started dating, "Nicki no matter what happens in our relationship I will never leave you. If you decide this isn't for you I will remain by your side." then when it happens I don't hear from you for three weeks." She said sniffling. "I just want my best friend back if I don't get nothing else." Safaree found her choice of words odd.

"What do you mean if you don't get nothing else." She sat up and faced him.

"Safaree when I saw your little girlfriend the other day hanging all over you it made me realize that I can not see you with anyone else. That made me realize that I need you. I realized that in your arms I've felt more safe and secure than I have in awhile. This last month has taught me that my  life with out you is not complete. But if you can't give me that type of love again I understand but I just really can't lose our friendship. There is too much to lose from our friendship than there is to gain from a relationship with you." There was silence for awhile. She couldn't read his facial expression. She scooted closer to him and grabbed his hand. "Say something Faree."

"Your right, I don't know if I will ever be able to give you that love again that I once had for you. Maybe we can try to work on it but I won't force it." Nicki looked away disappointed. He moved her head so that it was facing him again. "But if you want your best friend back hes here to stay." He eyes lit up. "I just wanna let you know though I will not push Melanie away. She is really good to me and wants to love me and i'm not going to deny her that chance."

"How are you gonna say you might try but still have her around Safaree?" Nicki said standing up confused.

"Nicki I'm not going to put all my faith back into you just for you to hurt me again. You have to see it from my view point." Nicki grabbed grabbed her hair and just stared at him.

"Fine Safaree i'll just have to deal." she dropped her hands from her head. He stood  up and hugged her then released her. She made sure not to get to close because this is not how she wanted to tell him about the babies but she was close enough to smell his Gucci cologne. She would wait for the right moment to spill the beans about THEIR beans. "You hungry?"

"Starving. What you got to eat dwarf?"

"I made some spaghetti and fish earlier if you want I can make you a plate to go?"

"Why I can't eat it here?" he asked.

"Well I thought you may have needed to get home to Ms. Melanie." Nicki said rolling her eyes.

"Don't start. And no I can stay awhile." He really had missed her company.

"Okay. Go sit ill bring it to you." He went and turned on the television. Nicki heated his food and grabbed him a water out the fridge and the hot sauce out the cabinet and gave it to him. She sat closely to him as he ate.

2 Weeks Later

Nicki had still not spoken to Safaree about the babies. She was now a month pregnant and showing a bit. She had been wearing loose fitting clothes, a lot of sweats around Safaree. They had been out on lunch dates a couple of times but just as friends. They were making progress. It was still times when she heard Melanies voice in his background she would catch a attitude, which would piss Safaree off. They had their on and off weeks, this was one of their off ones. She went ahead and told Lauren and Candi about her pregnancy. She couldn't keep it from them and Candi figured it out anyway when she saw Nicki eating a peanut butter and bacon sandwich. Nicki tried to play it off as just something new she wanted to try but she eventually broke her down and she confessed. They have been trying to convince her to tell Safaree but she just kept saying it wasn't the right time.

"Nicki your being stubborn. Your going to make it worse between you two. How do you think he is going to react to you knowing about these babies for a month and not telling him?" Lauren asked Nicki.

"Well if he wants to talk to me he can call and i'll tell him about them then, but until he gets out from under that high yellow bitch and becomes the Safaree I know, I ain't got shit to say to him." She stated and went to go get a pickle from the fridge. She was mad because Safaree broke one of their dates to take Melanie somewhere she wanted to go.

"Do you hear yourself Nicki? If you ain't IN love with that man then I don't know what love is." Candi said. Nicki just bit into her pickle and looked out the patio window. "If you weren't IN love with him that girl wouldn't phase you one bit."

"Shut up Candi! Your always in my business, I don't want to hear this shit right now."

"But your gonna hear it. I wouldn't be your friend if I didn't try and look out for you. I'd be like them other bitches out there trying to be your yes man. And if you don't tell him Nicki I promise you I will." Nickis head whipped around quickly.

"You wouldn't dare!" Nicki said trying to give her a threatening look. Candi crossed her arms.

"Try me Onika." She said. Lauren jumped in the conversation.

"Hey both of you calm down."

"SHUT UP!" they both yelled at her and went back to staring each other down.

"Oookayy." Lauren said and walked into the living room mumbling and cussing them both out under her breath.

"Why can't you just mind your business Candi damn?" Nicki said.

"You are my business. Your one of my best friends and I only want what's best for you. And you and Safarees on and off "friendship/relationship" is doing nothing but stressing you out which is not good for you nor those babies. You look like you haven't been sleeping well." Candi ran her thumb under Nickis eye where she had bags. Nicki looked away. She loved Candi and hated her at the same time. She always made Nicki deal with her issues when Nicki thought she wasn't ready.

"What if he doesn't want them Candi?"

"Nicki that man loves you. He will want them more than you'll ever know. You just have to tell him sweetie." She hugged Nicki.

"Thank you."

"No thanks needed. Now do you want me to call him for you or do you want to do it?" Candi said letting her go.

"I'll do it." Candi grabbed Nickis cell phone and handed it to her.

"Right Now?" Nicki asked

"Now is as good as time as any." Nicki rolled her eyes at Candi and snatched the phone. "You want me to stay in here with you?"

"No heffa i got it." They both chuckled. Candi left the room. Nicki took a deep breath and dialed Safarees number hoping she got an answer.

Safarees (POV)


"Safaree wait no." Melanie said running around to the other side of the counter she hurried to catch herself from slipping on the plastic on the floor.

"Wait for what you started it and i'm damn sure gonna finish it." He took off after her again. She squealed and took off into the living room she was about to round the corner but SB caught her by her shirt. he grabbed her and walked back to the front room and grabbed the biggest roller her could find and rolled the paint all up Melanies leg then put her down. "That will teach you." he said laughing. She just stood there tired and defeated.

"Your such a jerk Faree." She said giggling. He looked at her strangely. No one ever called him that but Nicki. His phone rang, it was Nicki. He hoped she was not on her bullshit today.

"Hello." he said.

"Hi Safaree."

"Hey Nic what's up?"

"Nothing much I was just wondering if We could meet up one day this week. I need to tell you something really important." Nicki said biting the side of her lip as she waited for his answer.

"Sure why not. What day is good for you?"

"Any day is fine."

"How bout Saturday." Nicki thought to herself that's two days away. That gave her enough time to get how she was going to tell him out. "Let's go to the arcade again Faree."

"Arcade? Are you sure that's where u wanna go?" he asked.

"Yep. It was fun the last time we went. Maybe i'll kick your butt on that basketball game again." he busted out laughing.

"That was one time." he said.

"So I still won. So it's a date?" she said. "Not like a date date Safaree like--"

"I know what you meant girl calm ya nerves. And yes I'll be there around 12 to pick you up Saturday so be ready when I get there Nicki." he said.

"Okay Okay I will. See you then Safaree." She hung up the phone.

"I wonder what's so important?" He thought to himself.
